Sleep Nap Snooze

How Dolphins Sleep

half-asleep, all day

Graffiti-style painting of a pink and purple dolphin gliding through bright blue painted water, from the book Sleep, Nap, Snooze.

From the spread “Semi-Sleeping” in Sleep, Nap, Snooze.

Dolphins sleep with one half of the brain at a time. The other half keeps swimming and breathing.

The eye on the awake side stays open, watching for company and for trouble.

Because they must surface to breathe, a dolphin can never fall fully asleep.
