How Elephants Sleep

~2 hours a day

Graffiti-style painting of a blue elephant standing in front of a brightly spray-painted wall, from the book Sleep, Nap, Snooze.

From the spread “Winning At Waketime” in Sleep, Nap, Snooze.

Wild elephants are among the shortest sleepers of all land mammals, resting roughly two hours out of every twenty-four.

They often doze standing up, and only lie down for deeper sleep every few days.

A herd takes turns resting so that someone is always awake and watching.
